The word Emoji is a combination of the two japanese words โ€œeโ€ (็ตต, โ€œpictureโ€) and โ€œmojiโ€ (ๆ–‡ๅญ—, โ€œcharacterโ€). Japan ๐Ÿ—พ is moreover country of origin of these pictograms. At first Emojis were primarly used to express feelings and emotions like Emoticons do, but then the number of Emojis has become more and more. By now the diversity of Emojis has been extended by flags, skin tones, genders and many more. Emoticons are way older than Emojis. Emoticon means the usage of one or more ASCII characters. One of the first and most used Emoticons is the following: :-). Emoticon sounds like emotion and that’s the primary use. Later, messenger programs like Skype and ICQ converted the emoticons to graphics like Emojis are converted nowadays. So what’s the meaning of all those Emojis? It’s not easy to answer this question. Sometimes an Emoji has more than one meaning. Additionally, some Emojis may have a positive AND a negative meaning depending on its context. Furthermore, an Emoji can have a different meaning in another language. Very often people use specific Emojis because they look suitable without knowing which meaning each of them has.
