Kaomoji (顔文字) comes from Japan. The term combines “kao” (顔), meaning face, and “moji” (文字), meaning character, describing textual representations of facial expressions using symbols, punctuation, and letters from various alphabets, primarily used in digital communication. These emoticons were popularized in Japan before the spread of more modern Unicode-based emoji, and unlike Western emoticons, such as ;-( or :-P, they are designed to be read without tilting one’s head to the side, such as (^_^).

The use of Japanese emoticons began in the late 1980s and early 1990s in Japanese online and electronic forums. Yasushi Wakabayashi, a Japanese artist, is often credited with creating some of the first iterations of these expressive characters in 1986. They quickly became popular within Japan and later gained popularity internationally as global communication on the internet broadened cultural exchanges. This form of expression allows users to convey emotions and nuances in text-based messaging, enhancing the depth of digital communication.
